What is it about Folly Beach that keeps people coming back year after year? Of course it’s the beach but it’s more than that. Folly Beach is a special town that is literally the “Edge of America.” We are a one stop light town with guests that come back every year, sometimes 3 or 4 times and locals that couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. As I write this today there is a great local blues band playing outside my office for the first annual “Follypalooza” benefiting local cancer patients and the Hollings Cancer Center. Kids are riding around on their Dad’s shoulders, goldfish have new homes if you toss the ring around the soda bottle and people are dancing in the streets.
A current guest just came into the office and said this was the first time she had stayed on Folly Beach. She had vacationed in Charleston before but never here. She said Folly is a “wonderful secret” and now plans on coming back every year. Her friend, vacationing here as well for the first time, has decided she wants to retire here. She actually took two days out of her vacation to go around with an agent to look at properties for sale. Wow, what an impression this little city has on people.
So why should you put Folly Beach on your vacation itinerary? Here is just a snip-it of why.
· It doesn’t matter who you are, how much money you have or where you came from, you are welcomed here and become part of the joy of this city.
· This is a true beach town in the best sense of the word. Old and young, local and out-of-towners come here. You can sit at the end of the beach with no one around and look at the lighthouse surrounded by water while you watch the sunset. You can also surf with the locals and meet a new group of friends while hanging out at any one of the local restaurants and bars.
· You know how most towns have the “local” places and the “tourist” places? Everything here is the “local” place and it all has that really down to earth feeling.
· You can walk on the beach (carefully) at night during Sea Turtle season and watch the hatchlings take their first dive into the ocean. This is not to miss.
· And most importantly, you can relax here, enjoy yourself and really feel like you are AWAY from your current life. We all need that sometimes.
